My Kids are Engaged & Their Wedding Plans Might Surprise You

Tahiti elopement | weddings in paradise

It’s been a banner year for happy news in the March Family. Early this year our son, Sean, and his lovely, longtime love, Erin, got engaged. We were thrilled.

Last month, our daughter, Andrea and her longtime love, wonderful Jeff, became engaged. Again, we were thrilled.

Now I know what you’re thinking: two kids, two engagements, a wedding planner’s dream. Right?

Ummmm, not so fast.

Are you sitting down?

Both couples are eloping. Far, far away. Andrea and Jeff to Thailand; Sean and Erin to Bora Bora.

Now, before you ask me (as many of my friends have) if I’m OK – yes I am! – let me tell you why my kids, whose mother is a wedding planner for Pete’s sake, are eloping.

  • these are four very practical young adults who simply aren’t comfortable spending thousands of $$$$s on a big, splashy wedding
  • they all love to travel and thought, why not combine the trip of a lifetime with the most important day of their lives
  • they want the exchange of vows to be a special, private moment

Like many parents, I had long pictured what my kids’ weddings might look like. I won’t pretend that I didn’t have a zillion ideas swirling around in my head, but my husband and I respect their decisions. It’s their day and, above all else, we want them to be happy. (Ever practical, my husband’s priority was assuring the weddings will be legal.)

The one thing I did insist on is that there must be a celebration. I understand keeping the actual ceremony small and intimate. In fact, I think it’s a lovely idea. But I also love the celebration aspect of weddings and, fortunately, the kids do too. So they will each have their barefoot (legal) beach wedding in a beautiful, exotic locale. And, at an appropriate time, there will be celebration parties with family and friends where we will toast the happy couples, feast and dance. And this proud Mom will get to flex her Wedding Planner muscles after all.

Win. Win.

And, honestly, who wouldn’t want to grab the chance to get married in paradise? Sounds like a dream to me.

That is too funny Christine March. I guess you’ve got a couple of nice vacations coming up:)

Hahaha. I wish. These will be parent-free weddings. It’ll be each couple and an officiant. Barefoot on a beach. And that’s just fine with me. 🙂
