The world lost a fashion icon this week with the passing of Oscar de la Renta. Known to be battling cancer in recent years, his death still caught people by surprise. Just last month he was front page news as the world gushed over the beautiful ivory tulle gown he designed for Amal Alamuddin for her wedding to George Clooney (aka my ex-future husband).

Oscar de la Renta was a throwback to a more elegant era. He was known for his kindness and generosity; intimates often spoke of his charm and charisma. Robin Ghivan, the fashion critic for the Washington Post, recalled the time de la Renta apologized to her for removing his tie. Said Ms. Ghivan, “… I mean, who does that? I don’t think I’ve ever seen him in anything other than a suit. So there was a sense of propriety about him…”

In honour of this elegant gentleman, who gave so much to the world of fashion for decades, I’d like to share some of his best fashion advice, and photographs of a few of my favourite Oscar de la Renta wedding gowns.

“Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.”

“Being well dressed hasn’t much to do with having good clothes. It’s a question of good balance and good common sense.”

Oscar de la Renta rose from modest roots in the Dominican Republic to the highest echelons of the fashion industry. He dressed first ladies, movie stars and Oprah, and made all of them feel and look beautiful. The man is truly an icon of American fashion.
