Watching Your Budget Spiral Out of Control

wedding budget

The average cost of a wedding in Canada (according to this 2015 survey) is over $30,000. That’s a lot of money. And here’s the kicker: 75% of couples expect they will go over budget.

How does this happen? Well, let’s look at how one item – just one – ends up costing way more than expected. The item? Your wedding dress. Here we go.

  • Dress Base Cost – $2,000
  • Alterations – $800
  • Veil – $200
  • Shoes – $275
  • Bra – $150
  • Earrings – $100
  • Taxes – $458.25

The actual cost of your reasonably priced $2,000 dress is now actually $3,983.25. That’s nearly twice as much as expected. And this happens because no bride wears just a dress. There are alterations, and accessories, and taxes.

Oh my.

Now factor in the billions of other details that you will be spending money on and watch your $20,000 budget spiral out of control.

The lesson here is pretty clear: make sure you understand ALL of the costs associated with every aspect of your wedding. Here’s a sampling of a few more expenses that can blow up your budget:

  • service charges
  • landmark fees
  • staffing
  • alcohol upgrades
  • rentals
  • delivery and set-up fees
  • permits and insurance

Make a budget. Keep your eyes wide open. Ask a lot of questions. Create a spreadsheet so you can track and monitor every single expense. Weddings are expensive, but remember, you’re in control.

Hidden costs can really get the best of some couples. It starts with what they think is a small expense but they don’t think about the other details – as you mentioned, a good example, dress alterations, etc.

I think it is important for couples to have their eyes open and remember that the dress is not the only thing sneaking in with additional costs!

    A great post!

So true. Even small unexpected expenses can really add up. It’s a cliche, but so very true.
